The Ustinov Intercultural Forum invites you to join us for our second gallery tour taking place in the Durham Oriental Museum, on Saturday 25 May (1pm-3pm). In this session our museum guide will take us through parts of the collection themed around the exercise of Power throughout the ages, both how it was established and maintained. Moreover, we’ll consider the idea of societal powerlessness, how at various times in history rulers have sought to exert control over different ethnicities and minority groups. From this we’ll consider ideas about rebellion, about the subversion and reclamation of power in a society.

After the tour we will have a brief break for tea and snacks, after which attendees will gather in the museum’s study room for a unique opportunity to physically examine items drawn from the museum’s stored collections. This will include objects from Egypt related to kingship and pharaonic power, as well as some items related to Imperial power in China. The object handling session has a limited number of spaces, so to ensure a spot please e-mail ustinov.uif@durham.ac.uk
